For months I thought I was trying to make bubble bath.
The experiments looked reasonable enough. Different ingredients. Different ratios. A notebook full of observations. Progress measured one batch at a time.
The funny part is that I wasn’t really studying bath foam.
I was studying bubbles in the air.
I already knew how soap bubbles behaved. I knew about bubble wands and giant bubbles, about blowing gently for larger bubbles and harder for smaller ones. Without realizing it, I carried those assumptions into the bathtub.
Bath foam refused to cooperate.
Eventually I stopped experimenting. The notebook went back into the closet. I bought a bottle of commercial bubble bath because it was easy. I played with catnip bubbles with Hino. I joined toddlers at the library, popping bubbles in the air. I wasn’t trying to solve anything anymore.
Then I came back.
The realization was almost embarrassingly simple.
These aren’t air bubbles. They’re water bubbles.
That sentence changed everything.
I stopped asking how to trap air.
I started asking how to build foam.
The answer turned out to be wonderfully uncomplicated: two parts decyl glucoside and one part cocamidopropyl betaine.
But the recipe wasn’t really the discovery.
The discovery was that understanding often arrives when we stop forcing one kind of knowledge to explain another.
Sometimes two things share a name but not a nature.
Air bubbles and bath foam.
Libraries and bookstores.
Questions and answers.
The world keeps reminding me that every subject deserves to be encountered on its own terms.
The bubbles were beautiful.
But what they really taught me was how to begin again.
