Conditions

People sometimes ask me how I get into these strange little hobbies. This week it was bubbles. A friend asked how I got into them. He said it seemed to happen all at once. I thought about it for a while before I answered. The truth is, I don’t know a spell that makes someone sleepy. I don’t know a spell that heals. I don’t know a spell that makes someone happier. But I do believe something that feels almost as magical. I believe we can shape the conditions that invite those things. Warm water doesn’t create peace, but it welcomes it. A favorite scent can’t summon a memory, but sometimes it opens the door. Music can’t manufacture joy, but it can make room for it. A library doesn’t make anyone curious. It simply becomes a place where curiosity has somewhere to live. Maybe that’s what magic really is. Not changing people. Tending the conditions where something beautiful has a chance to happen. I started making my own bath foam because I wanted a better bath. At first, I thought I was learning about bubbles. Then I discovered there were really two different worlds. The bubbles that become foam. The bubbles that float away. Somewhere between those two questions I wandered into soap films, polymers, little glass beakers, and friends gathered around the kitchen comparing one bubble solution to another. One evening someone asked, “How did you do that?” The honest answer is that I was only trying to make a better bath. Curiosity has a funny way of changing the question until you realize you’ve wandered into a completely different neighborhood. I think that’s my favorite kind of discovery. Not because I found the answer. Because I found a place worth exploring. And maybe that’s the closest thing to magic I know.
